Common Questions We Hear!

Hardscaping refers to the use of non-living materials of a landscape including stone, brick, wood, gravel, and concrete that used to create functional and decorative outdoor spaces such as patios, walkways, and driveways.

Hardscaping adds structure, usability, and aesthetic value to your outdoor space. It can increase property value, reduce maintenance requirements, and enhance your outdoor living experience.

Consider factors like budget, if you have a need for permeable pavement or other special considerations, and the overall style of your home and landscape. If you’re unsure on what best fits your needs, we can provide a recommendation.

Costs vary widely depending on the project size, materials, and labor.  For example, a simple patio with ideal conditions might cost a few thousand dollars, while a fully landscaped yard with retaining walls and walkways can cost $100,000 or more. Common things to consider that could increase the cost include:  poor access to the work area, building in areas with significant elevation changes,  or incorporation of intricate designs.

Permits may be required for some larger projects, especially those involving retaining walls, drainage systems, or permanent structures. Check local regulations to be sure.

Project timelines depend on size and complexity as well as municipal approval. A small patio that doesn’t require a permit might take a couple days, while larger or more intricately designed areas could take weeks or months to get permitted before construction ever begins. It is important to consider the permitting process when planning to ensure that timelines are met.

Proper planning, such as grading the land away from your home and other structures, and installing drainage systems, is essential to prevent water pooling and erosive damage. This could be something as simple as letting our open-graded base (OGB) provide drainage and a reservoir, installing a french drain or channel drain, or in more tricky applications or where municipally required, perforated subdrains beneath our gravel base might be warranted.

Compared to softscaping, hardscaping is generally low-maintenance. However, it may require occasional cleaning, sealing, and re-sanding.  A light pressure wash once a year and a re-sanding every 3-5 years is typically enough to keep your hardscape looking great. Be sure to use appropriate cleaning and sealing methods for the material.  If you’re unsure which cleaner or sealer is right for you, reach out to your contractor for a recommendation. For our local clients, we are happy to take this task off your plate.  Also, be sure to keep leaves swept off your hardscaped surfaces as they can sometimes stain the surface of the pavement. It is typical that exposure to sunlight, weather, and use can cause some fading or wear, but proper maintenance helps extend longevity.

We do! We have great partners that are able to provide financing opportunities for our clients who’d like to take advantage of them. Check out our finance page to see what options are right for you.
