Permeable Paving

Permeable Paving

Overview :

Permeable paving offers significant benefits by allowing stormwater to infiltrate the ground, effectively mitigating flood risks and water damage as well as reduction of the “heat island” effect. Our solutions provide residential, commercial, and public property owners with increased confidence in safeguarding their properties from heavy rainfall, ensuring long-term protection from flooding, rot and erosion, and standing water that may have toxic pollutants or breed mosquitoes.  Most of our permeable paving solutions are ADA compliant and approved for both vehicular and pedestrian use.

For more of the science behind permeable paving check out our blog called Environmentally Friendly Solutions.

Our permeable paving options are listed below with pricing information. We believe that an informed client is best equipped to invest without having to wonder what surprises await. Permeability is achieved through many avenues, but budget and aesthetic usually play the biggest part in people’s decision.

Permeable Collection

This collection consists of a variety of options suited for our environmentally-conscious clients or those that have stormwater or drainage concerns. Permeable pavers are also warranted when municipalities regulate amount of impervious coverage allowed on any particular lot. Many of these pavers are manufactured from recycled materials or are otherwise ethically-sourced. Permeable or pervious paving systems allow for rainwater to percolate back into the ground and greatly reduce flooding associated with stormwater runoff. Our clients can expect to invest a pretty penny for permeable surfaces when compared to their impervious counterpart.  This is due to a few different factors, including increased material costs, excavation depth, and additional labor and time associated with the installation.

A few of the major benefits to permeable paving include:

  • Reduced storm water runoff
  • Mitigated flooding
  • Reduced water pollution
  • Protection against rot & erosion
  • EPA compliance
  • Declared ‘Green Infrastructure’

Our Most Popular Permable Paving Options!

Gravel Paving

Gravel paving is the most budget-friendly option in our permeable collection. It utilizes a specialized grid that prevents rutting and reduces loss of gravel over time. These can be used for heavy duty applications such as emergency lanes, commercial parking needs, or for residential applications with light traffic, keeping it away from buildings and out of streets and waterways. Typical cover gravel choices include Black Star Gravel, Texas granite, and crushed limestone.

Common Questions We Hear!

Permeable paving refers to paving methods designed to allow water to filter through surfaces, reducing stormwater runoff and improving drainage. Common materials include pervious concrete, interlocking pavers, gravel systems, rubber surfacing, turf grids, or resin-bound gravel.

If you have drainage issues or flooding, then permeable paving can help. It may also be required depending on your municipal regulations.

Anywhere regular pavement is typically used, permeable paving can be used. This can include driveways, parking lots, patios, sidewalks, hike and bike trails, playgrounds, etc.  The only exception at present is that it cannot be used on main roads, but with continuously advancing technology, that could change very soon

Permeable paving does have a higher upfront cost, but the long term investment ends up being much lower when we take into account, to the savings that would be associated with water damage, stormwater management, or maintenance requirements.  The reason for the higher installation cost has much to do with the process and materials that are used. Extra excavation is needed compared to traditional paving like concrete. Further, clean drain rock is required to facilitate optimal drainage while providing the strength necessary to stand up to the test of time.

Permeable paving aids the environment in a number of ways. It reduces surface runoff which helps to prevent erosion and combined sewer overflow (CSO) which is what happens when combined sewer systems become overwhelmed by excess stormwater and overflow into nearby streams and rivers. It minimizes urban flooding and filters pollutants before they reach groundwater and waterways. Permeable paving has been officially declared ‘Green Infrastructure’ by the City of Houston and many metropolitan areas in Texas are following suit. It also meets EPA compliance standards and is considered an eco-friendly. Another thing to note is that permeable paving often utilizes recycled materials, reducing contributions to landfill trash.
